Tax on Agriculture
Thursday, June 18, 2009
Finance Adviser Shaukat Tareen is reported to have said on Wednesday that the agriculture sector must be brought under the tax net in 2010-11, saying he would resign if he was not able to achieve that. It is good for the gentleman that he has wished agriculture sector to be brought under the tax net in 2010-2011 and not 2009-2010. Otherwise he will have to resign in next few days. I only hope that the Financial Adviser remembers his statement until June next year.
Our country continues to be ruled by feudal lords and, of late, industrialists. The rulers have resisted agricultural reforms and the tax thereon for over sixty years and it is least likely that they are going to listen to the Financial Advisor. The rulers would rather like to replace the Financial Advisor than accept the agriculture tax.
